Observed every October 10 from 1992 onward, World Mental Health Day unites people worldwide to shine a light on mental health, end stigma, and ensure mental well-being gets the same attention as physical health. This year celebration fosters the “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”.

Awareness is where the conversation begins, but action is what keeps it alive. Action does not always have to be something grand. Sometimes, it begins with a conversation.  Do you ever feel being heard? Do you ever feel that someone validates what you feel?

At Cooee, we experience this.. The space for this kind of conversation, creating opportunities for people to talk, listen, and connect can be one meaningful way of turning mental health awareness into action. Through one-on-one coaching sessions, coaching for success stories, team huddles, conversations between team members and our coaches, and even one-on-one conversation with the CEO. Cooeemates are given an opportunity to express themselves, reflect on their experiences, recognize their strengths, and discuss the challenges they are facing.

These conversations are not simply about performance or productivity. A coaching conversation can begin with work, but it can lead to something deeper: How are you doing? What challenges you? What support do you need?

Sometimes, being given the space to speak is already a form of support. At Cooee, importance was placed on work-life balance and reflects the understanding that employees are at the top.Cooeemates way of looking at our well-being is through the pillars of recovery: GoActive, GoHealthy, GoFocus, and GoSnooze. Work is an important part of life, but it is not the entirety of someone's life. People have families, relationships, personal goals, struggles, responsibilities, and dreams outside of our roles at work.

A Conversation Can Make a Difference

This is where listening becomes meaningful. We connect to listen. Listening means more than simply hearing someone's words. It means creating a space where people feel safe enough to express themselves without immediately being judged or dismissed. It means recognizing that behind every Cooeemates, there is a person who may sometimes need encouragement, understanding, or simply someone willing to listen. A coaching conversation can therefore become more than a professional development tool. It can become a bridge between people.

Consider the experience of an employee who enters a coaching session carrying a difficult week. They may not necessarily say, “I am struggling with my mental health.” Instead, it may appear through frustration, tiredness, lack of motivation, uncertainty, or simply the feeling of being overwhelmed. A good coach does not need to immediately have all the answers. Sometimes, the first step is to listen. A meaningful coaching conversation can help a Cooeemate recognize that our concerns are valid, that our efforts are noticed, and that they are not expected to navigate every challenge alone.

“I realized that I did not always need someone to solve the problem for me. Sometimes, I just needed someone to listen, help me see things differently, and remind me that I was capable of moving forward.”

This kind of testimonial captures an important message, support does not always mean having the perfect answer. Sometimes, support means creating a safe space where another person can find our own answers and this is where workplace culture and mental health intersect. When Cooeemates feel heard, respected, and supported, conversations about challenges become less frightening. When people are encouraged to communicate openly, the walls created by stigma can slowly become smaller.

As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, may we not allow the message to remain only on posters, hashtags, seminars, and one day campaigns. Let us carry it into our homes, workplaces, communities, and everyday conversations.

In the workplace, this can mean checking on a colleague. It can mean giving someone the opportunity to speak during a one-on-one conversation. It can mean recognizing the importance of work-life balance. It can mean creating coaching spaces where people are encouraged not only to improve professionally but also to reflect personally and sometimes, it simply means saying, “I’m here. Tell me what you’re going through.” Because the goal is not only to make people aware of mental health, the goal is to make people feel heard. To make them feel accepted. To make them feel understood. And most importantly, to remind every person who is silently struggling that their voice matters, their life matters, and they do not have to face the darkness alone.

From 1992 to the present, World Mental Health Day has continued to raise its voice. Now, it is our turn to listen and to act because mental health awareness becomes meaningful when awareness turns into connection, connection turns into conversation, and conversation turns into action.
